Philippine government summoned the Chinese ambassador on Monday to convey a diplomatic protest over the Chinese coast guard's use of a water cannon against a Filipino supply boat in the disputed South China Sea, a Philippine official said.

The Philippine military on Sunday condemned the Chinese coast guard ship's "excessive and offensive" use of a water cannon to block a Filipino supply boat from delivering a new batch of troops, food, water and fuel to the Philippine-occupied Second Thomas Shoal in the disputed waters.

The United States, the European Union and their key allies including Australia and Japan expressed support to the Philippines and concern over the Chinese ship's actions. Washington renewed a warning that it is obliged to defend its longtime treaty ally if Filipino public vessels and forces come under an armed attack including in the South China Sea.

Tense confrontation

The tense confrontation on Saturday was the latest flare-up in the long-seething territorial conflicts involving China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.

One of several top Philippine officials dealing with the incident told The Associated Press that the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila summoned Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian on Monday morning to convey a strongly worded diplomatic protest.

The protest would underscore how the Chinese coast guard ship's action violated international regulations aimed at avoiding collisions at sea and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of a lack of authority to discuss the government's actions before they are publicly disclosed.

Busy shipping lanes

The disputes in the South China Sea, one of the world's busiest sea lanes, have long been regarded as an Asian flashpoint and a delicate fault line in the rivalry between the United States and China in the region. China claims ownership over virtually the entire strategic waterway despite international rulings that invalidated Beijing's vast territorial claims, such as that in 2016 by the Permanent Court of Arbitration, an international body based in The Hague. China rejects that ruling.

Philippine navy personnel on board two chartered supply boats were cruising toward Second Thomas, escorted by Philippine coast guard ships, when a Chinese coast guard ship approached and used a powerful water cannon to block the Filipinos from the shoal that China also claims, the Philippine military and coast guard said Sunday.

Wanton disregard

The Chinese ship's action was "in wanton disregard of the safety of the people on board" the Philippine navy-chartered boat and violated international law, the Armed Forces of the Philippines said on Sunday.

The "excessive and offensive actions against Philippine vessels" near the shoal prevented one of the two Filipino boats from unloading supplies needed by Filipino troops guarding the shoal onboard a long-marooned Philippine navy ship, the BRP Sierra Madre, the Philippine military said.

It called on the Chinese coast guard and China's central military commission "to act with prudence and be responsible in their actions to prevent miscalculations and accidents that will endanger people's lives."

Freedom of navigation

The US State Department said in a statement that by "firing water cannons and employing unsafe blocking manoeuvres, PRC ships interfered with the Philippines' lawful exercise of high seas freedom of navigation and jeopardised the safety of the Philippine vessels and crew." It used the acronym for the People's Republic of China.

It added that such actions are a direct threat to "regional peace and stability".

China has long demanded that the Philippines withdraw its small contingent of naval forces and tow away the actively commissioned but crumbling BRP Sierra Madre. The navy ship was deliberately marooned on the shoal in 1999 and now serves as a fragile symbol of Manila's territorial claim to the atoll.

Chinese ships had blocked and shadowed navy vessels delivering food and other supplies to the Filipino sailors on the ship in the shoal, which Chinese coast guard ships and a swarm of Chinese fishing boats - suspected to be manned by militias - have surrounded for years.

While the US lays no claims to the South China Sea, it has often lashed out at China's aggressive actions and deployed its warships and fighter jets in patrols and military exercises with regional allies to uphold freedom of navigation and overflight, which it says is in America's national interest.

China has warned the US to stop meddling in what it calls a purely Asian dispute and has warned of unspecified repercussions.

The Philippine government summoned the Chinese ambassador on Monday to convey a diplomatic protest over the Chinese coast guard's use of a water cannon against a Filipino supply boat in the disputed South China Sea, a Philippine official said.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen warned on Monday that Europe would not tolerate aggression in Ukraine or the Indo-Pacific, as she renewed in a speech the European Union's recognition of a The situation worsened when Brian Epstein and Mal Evans were initially ordered off the plane, Epstein being forced to hand over a substantial sum of Philippine peso notes from the profits of the Manila shows to the tax authorities.

Eventually, The Beatles managed to leave Manila, departing for New Delhi via Bangkok and safely returning to the UK on 8 July. They held a brief press conference before embarking on a much-needed two-week break. Little did they know that the controversy in the Philippines was just the beginning of a turbulent period for the band.

The following month, John Lennon's infamous misquote about The Beatles being "bigger than Jesus" ignited a firestorm of criticism and backlash. The incident would have a profound impact on the band's career and further escalate the tensions and controversies surrounding them.

In the summer of 1966, amidst their hectic schedule and worldwide fame, <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//culture//tag//the-beatles/">The Beatles found themselves embroiled in a controversy during their visit to the Philippines. have been warned to keep their distance from the Philippines’ most active volcano after it started spewing lava on Sunday night.

Mayon Volcano, in the northeastern Albay province, was raised to alert level three on a five-step warning system on Thursday, meaning a hazardous eruption is possible in weeks or days.

With its perfectly conical shape, the 2,462-metre high volcano is a popular tourist draw. Many people rushed out of restaurants and bars in the nearby seaside town of Legaspi last night to snap pictures of the astonishing scene.

Some tourists have even begun camping out in hilltops to watch the event unfold. It is so popular there are designated official viewing spots where people can see Mayon’s fiery glow, the BBC reports.

But the high-risk zone around Mayon may be expanded should the eruption turn violent, says Teresito Bacolcol, director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

“What we are seeing now is an effusive eruption,” Bacolcol told The Associated Press. “We are looking at this on a day-to-day basis."

Thousands of people have been evacuated from around Mayon Volcano

The level three warning means there is currently a relatively high level of unrest as magma is in Mayon’s crater, and there is a danger of lava flows, rockfalls and other volcanic hazards.

Officials have warned tens of thousands of villagers to be prepared to flee from their homes if the gentle eruption turns into a violent and life-threatening explosion.

More than 13,000 people have left the mostly poor farming communities within a 6-kilometre radius of Mayon Volcano’s crater in mandatory evacuations since volcanic activity increased last week.

But an unspecified number of residents remain within the permanent danger zone below Mayon, an area long declared off-limits to people but where generations have lived and farmed because they have nowhere else to go.

Mayon is one of 24 active volcanoes in the Philippines. It last erupted violently in 2018, displacing tens of thousands of villagers. In 1814, Mayon’s eruption buried entire villages and reportedly left more than 1,000 people dead.

Is it safe to travel to the Philippines after volcanic activity?

With its white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and emerald rice fields, the Philippines holds huge appeal for tourists. More than 8 million people travelled to the southeast Asian country in 2019, and it’s still building its post-pandemic numbers back up.

But it’s important to be aware of the risks too. The archipelago is lashed by about 20 typhoons and tropical storms a year and is located on the so-called Pacific “ Ring of Fire ,” the rim of seismic faults where most of the world’s earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur.

There’s currently no rules against travelling to the wider area around the Mayon Volcano in Albay, Bicol. However the Philippines Department of Tourism states that any tourism-related activities like mountain climbing or ATV tours within the Permanent Danger Zone are now strictly banned.

The UK’s Foreign Office advises that tourists should follow local advice before travelling to volcanic areas, and avoid them during and immediately after heavy rainfall when there’s increased risk of lava flows.

“Ash plumes can affect air quality and have an impact on health. A properly fitted face mask may provide some protection,” it adds.

In its latest bulletin , PHIVOLCS says that civil aviation authorities must advice pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ash from any sudden eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.

Tourists have been warned to keep their distance from the Philippines’ most active volcano after it started spewing lava on Sunday night.

Mayon Volcano, in the northeastern Albay province, was raised to alert level three on a five-step warning system on Thursday, meaning a hazardous eruption is possible in weeks or days.

With its perfectly conical shape, the 2,462-metre high <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//travel//2023//05//12//plan-a-summer-adventure-around-europes-most-exciting-extinct-volcanoes/">volcano/strong>/a> is a popular tourist draw.

Just 250 kilometres north of Manila, this network of rice fields is known locally as the “stairs to heaven”. The entire valley is covered with green steps, carved into the mountain by hand by the ancestors of the Igorot people at least two millennia ago.

Farmer Julia Amehna has worked in the rice fields, which she inherited from her parents, for the last 50 years.

“This stone wall was built by my ancestors 2,000 years ago. unpredictable volcano in the central Philippines spewed out a column of ash at least 1 km long into the sky on Sunday.

Authorities were forced to raise the alert at Mount Bulusan by one notch and remind residents not to enter the danger zone.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised its alert on Bulusan to level 1, or low level of volcanic unrest, from 0 on a five-level scale, which means it is currently in an "abnormal condition."

In the 24 hours before the eruption, 77 volcanic earthquakes were recorded, the institute said in a statement.

Renato Solidum, the head of the institute, described Bulusan's eruption as "phreatic", or steam-driven, which is typical of Bulusan Volcano.

"The precaution is the same, no entry in the 4 km radius permanent danger zone, and of course, one has to be protected form ashfall if there will be ashfall in the area, like wearing of masks or staying indoors," Solidum told Reuters.

Volcanos can create acid rain which is harmful to the environment. Toxic gases emitted from volcanos, in particular SO2, HCl, and HF, mix with water vapour to form the acid rain, which then damages crops on the ground.

Earthquakes are common in the Pacific 'Ring of Fire'

The huge cloud of ash from Bulusan turned the skies grey, as seen in a video shared on Facebook by a resident of Casiguran town on Bulusan's northern slopes.

Bulusan, among the Philippines' 24 active volcanoes, last erupted in June 2017, the institute said.

The Philippines is in the Pacific 'Ring of Made up of a whopping 7,641 islands , the southeast Asian archipelago sits near the equator in the Pacific Ocean.

Blessed with sublime sunshine and unique landscapes, around 2,000 of the islands are inhabited, with Luzon, the largest and northernmost island home to the Filipino capital of Manila .

New data from the KAYAK summer travel report shows that Manila is the most searched for destination for this summer.

The islands reopened to fully vaccinated tourists from visa-free countries on 10 February 2022. Visa-free travel is now possible if you are staying for less than 30 days - you can see the full list of visa-free countries here.

“The Philippines has been one of the most conservative countries in the world in terms of its COVID-19 protections,” said Gerard Panga, the Philippines tourism spokesperson to the UK.

“For over a year we have been preparing the destinations to make sure they are compliant with global standards in terms of health and safety protections.”

So where should you visit when you get there?

A remote island famous for filming

The country’s stringent measures have meant it has been able to host some unique events, despite the pandemic.

“Even during the height of COVID-19 infection cases, we had the Survivor TV group from Israel. More than 100 people, the cast and crew of Survivor TV went to this remote island in Caramoan,” says Panga.

Once described as a ‘hidden island’, the TV blockbuster is now so globally famous that the island is well known to travellers, though still difficult to reach.

Isolated from the main Caramoan Peninsula, you may need to take several buses and boats to reach it.

Despite the isolation of some of its islands, the Philippines has suffered from overtourism in the past too.

But special measures have meant that one of its most famous destinations, Boracay Island, has been able to transform itself for the better.

Boracay Island

Awarded the title of the ‘second most instagrammable place in the world’ by Big 7 Travel and labelled the best island in the world by Travel+Leisure in 2012, global popularity soon overwhelmed Boracay.

After gaining a reputation as a 24/7 party island, the authorities declared the closure of the 10.32km islet to holidaymakers to give the ecosystem (and the locals) a chance to recover.

“Now on the beach we don’t allow anymore smoking, drinking, loud parties or loud music, so it’s become a haven for relaxation, honeymooners, families, for communing with nature,” says Panga.

“We had to remove all the structures within the shoreline, so now it's all wild, the water is clear.”

Moalboal on Cebu island

If you’d rather have an adventure than lounge on the beach all day, there are plenty of activities for the wild at heart in the Philippines.

If underwater sports are your thing, then how about swimming with millions of sardines?

The sardine run in the beachside town of Moalboal on Cebu island offers divers a truly unique experience.

Head to Panagsama beach at practically any time of year (though you’ll have a clearer view if you avoid the rainy season from June to October) and you’ll be able to swim with this incredible shoal of fish.

The sardines rise close to the water’s surface to feed on plankton, so even snorkelers can enjoy the silver flashes of the swaying sardines.

“The underwater treasures of the Philippines are really beyond compare, in fact we are Asia’s diving capital,” says Panga.

“According to the WTA (World Travel Awards) in the last three years, 2019 to 2021, we have been voted the world’s leading diving destination.”

The island of Mindanao

For something a little less fishy, hiking is a great way to explore the Philippines’ sprawling environment.

The country has 3,134 mountains to its name, with the highest being Mount Apo on the island of Mindanao.

You don’t need to climb the highest mountain to get your hiking fix though. Mount Pulag is a great place for seasoned and less experienced (but not beginner) hikers, as it offers a variety of trails to suit a range of abilities.

Popular with backpackers due to the stunning ‘cloud sea’ views from the top of the peak, it’s also a great place to watch the sunrise. Do come fully prepared though, as temperatures on the mountainside can drop to -5°C and depending on which trail you take, the hike can take between seven hours or a few days.

You won’t find many more naturally diverse countries than <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2021//04//20//unpaid-and-from-scratch-three-unlikely-women-embarking-on-environmental-missions/">the Philippines.
