Middle East
No matter which country you are travelling to, from or though, airlines should keep passengers informed and provide food and accommodation (if the delay necessitates an overnight stay).

If you’re coming from or going to an EU destination, passenger rights mean that if your flight is delayed for two hours or more at departure, the airline must offer you care including meals, refreshments and, if necessary, accommodation.

If the delay means that you arrive at your final destination more than three hours late, you may also be entitled to financial compensation. The amount is based on how far you are flying.

If your flight arrives in the EU from Dubai and is operated by an EU airline, or if it departs from the EU to Dubai and is operated by any airline, EU air passenger rights apply.

However, if your flight is not EU-regulated, you won't be covered by the UK/EU flight delay compensation scheme.

However, most airlines have a contractual obligation to offer passengers a choice between a later flight, alternative transport or a refund under the Montreal Convention.

Check if the Montreal Convention covers your airline, as you might be able to claim for any losses caused by a delay.

Whether or not you are covered by it, it’s worth scanning the Terms and Conditions of your travel insurance policy as it may also offer limited coverage for delays.

<div class="widget widget--type-image widget--size-fullwidth widget--animation-fade-in widget--align-center" is a vast country – it covers more than 783 km² of land – and from its stunning Aegean Sea coastline in the west to the beautiful Black Sea shores in the north, its landscapes are replete with spectacular topography, remote rural towns and bustling cities. Boasting 40 national parks, 21 UNESCO Heritage Sites and historic ruins that date back millennia, there’s plenty to explore in Türkiye.

One of the best ways to take it all in is by train. The country has a comprehensive rail system, able to carry travellers from Türkiye’s remotest regions to its urban hubs and beyond. Plus, some of these journeys are as scenic as they come. Get started on your journey of discovery with these five striking routes.

1 Touristic Dogu Express train

The Dogu Express is one of the most famous train routes in Türkiye, travelling between the country’s capital, Ankara, and Kars, an ancient city in Northeast Anatolia. Don’t confuse the Touristic Dogu Express with the regular Dogu Express. The latter stops at 52 stations and features only regular seats while the Touristic Dogu Express was created specifically for visitors and runs three times a week. It stops at 25 destinations, offers 2-3 hour excursions at points along the way (Ilic and Erzurum eastbound and Erzincan, Divrigi, and Sivas westbound) and offers sleeper cabins.

Total journey time is roughly 32 hours compared to 26 on the regular Dogu Express. Whichever you choose, the route is equally rewarding. Across the 1,310-kilometre stretch of track, travellers can enjoy some of Türkiye’s most beautiful landscapes. Excursions allow travellers to enjoy the likes of the UNESCO-listed ancient city of Ani, sleigh tours on the frozen Lake Cildir (in the winter) and taste Cağ Kebabs at Erzurum.

2 Van Lake Express

This twice-weekly train has become a popular option for rail fans in Türkiye. Travelling between Ankara and Tatvan in roughly 25 hours, the supremely scenic route of the Van Lake Express traverses Eastern Türkiye’s beautiful landscapes. These include the lakes of Keban Baraji, the banks of the Euphrates River and the vast Lake Van, on which the shores of Tatvan sit. Stops along the way offer multiple opportunities to see some of the country’s best bits.

Kayseri allows access to the world-famous Cappadocia, with its “fairy chimneys”, hot air balloon festival and underground cities. The ancient towns of Malatya and Elazığ are also stops en route, while Mount Erciyes in Kayseri and the final destination of Tatvan are famed for their ski seasons. The train itself is comprehensive and offers a range of seating, from regular seats to couchettes and bed cabins, as well as a dining cart.

3 Karaelmas Tourism Express

Set to re-open in April 2024, this short, but very sweet, roughly three-hour train journey in the northwest of Türkiye runs from the province of Karabük up to the Black Sea coast. As starting locations go, Karabük is a good one. Situated on a key east-west trading route, the province encompasses the UNESCO-listed city of Safranbolu, famous for its influential Ottoman architecture.

Once on the train, travellers will be able to bask in a particularly lush part of the country, riding past such delights as the Yenice Forest and Şeker Canyon. Keen historians should hop off at Filyos for a tour of the ancient city, which dates back to the 7th century BCE and is believed to be the birthplace of Philetaerus, who founded the Attalid dynasty of Pergamon.

4 Taurus Express

This rail journey is one for the history books. The Taurus Express began in 1930 as a high-end, overnight sleeper train running betweeniand Baghdad – it even features in the opening chapter of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. Today, it operates a much shorter route, running only between Adana and Konya, and without sleeping carriages.

It’s still a distinctly beautiful journey and well worth a ride. The roughly six-hour passage cuts right along the edge of the Anatolian Plateau, traversing the imposing Taurus Mountains via tunnels carved into the limestone rock, navigating the beautiful topography of the steppe and gliding over dramatic bridges and past auburn forests. Its starting point, Konya, is a city which dates back to 3,000 BCE, which was the final home of Rumi (of the Whirling Dervishes).

5 Pamukkale Ekspresi Train

Crossing north to south down the east of Türkiye, this picturesque route takes passengers through the Aegean’s lush and fertile landscapes between Eskisehir and Denizli. The eight-hour journey (slightly longer if you link up from the high-speed train from İstanbul to Eskişehir) traverses some of Türkiye’s more remote landscapes, stopping at the towns of Kütahya (take a look around the Kütahya Museum to see examples of the region’s once-famed earthen) and Afyonkarahisar.

Once at Denizli, it’s worth the (relatively) short transfer to the ancient city of Hierapolis, which is 17.5 km away. These ancient ruins are famous for their hot springs, which visitors can still use today (look out for Cleopatra’s Pool; one of the most popular). The region was so attractive that many ancient Romans used to retire there to die. A large necropolis filled with tombs, along with remnants of the millennia-year-old city, can be toured today.

Türkiye is a vast country – it covers more than 783 km² of land – and from its stunning Aegean Sea coastline in the west to the beautiful Black Sea shores in the north, its landscapes are replete with spectacular topography, remote rural towns and bustling cities. He is not alone in his plight as hundreds of other farmers across the northeast grapple with the pollution.

The oil spills, which first appeared in February, were blamed on Türkiye after its military conducted a series of airstrikes on Kurdish-affiliated oil refineries in northeastern Syria .

“Since the attacks, I stopped watering my lot using water from the river,” Al-Aswad tells Euronews Green. “It would be easier for me to just uproot the harvest and poison the soil instead.”

What’s behind the oil pollution in Syria?

According to the Turkish minister of defense, the attacks were in retaliation for the death of nine Turkish soldiers in January after Kurdish fighters linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) raided a Turkish military base in Iraq.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which Türkiye considers a branch of the PKK - a Turkish and Western-designated terrorist organisation - is the military wing of the Kurdish-led, US-supported Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria. AANES has gained control over much of Syria's northeast following the conflict against Islamic State militant groups in Syria.

Türkiye has carried out a series of military ground operations since 2016 to limit SDF presence in border areas in northern Syria.

The continuous fighting has exacerbated an already deteriorating humanitarian crisis in the north, with five million people at risk of losing access to clean drinking water in a region once celebrated as the nation’s ' breadbasket '.

Northeast Syria is vulnerable to climate change

Al-Aswad now relies on rainfall for irrigation, but with Syria enduring its worst drought in seven decades, he is praying for an end to the precarious situation.

Oil pollution was not the only consequence farmers had to deal with in the aftermath of the attacks, according to Hamdan Al-Shammari, a farmer from Tell Brak.

“By disrupting oil flow to the region, the airstrikes have worsened the power cuts in the northeast, which can go on for most of the day,” he explains. “It also reduced the availability of diesel needed to power irrigation systems for generating water flow to the soil.”

Climate change is a global threat, and Syria’s northeast is no exception, especially as it suffers the decades-long consequences of desertification and drought. It is also in constant need of reforestation efforts, according to Raman Drouish, agricultural engineer and environmental expert.

More than a decade of conflict has cost Syria at least 25 per cent of its forest coverage, leaving it “at very high risk in terms of vulnerability and low readiness to adapt to climate change,” according to an EU climate change risk index.

Fareed Saadoun, a Kurdish affairs analyst, notes that primitive oil extraction and refining techniques have long plagued the region. “Burning crude oil has caused the production of derivatives filled with toxic and carcinogenic gases, which have had a negative impact on general health in northeast Syria,” he says.

"You have on one end, the scarcity of green areas; on the other, the lack of adequate attention to reforestation, and to make matters worse, the Turkish attacks on the region,” Drouish says.

“Against this backdrop, reforestation campaigns become more important than ever.”

Civil society unites for a greener northeast

In response to the airstrike and ongoing drought, a coalition of 31 civil society organisations in northeastern Syria have organised a voluntary campaign to plant an initial 1,000 trees in the first half of 2024.

The joint effort, called Aghras Al-Somoud (planting resilience in English) kicked off on 27 February. So far local organisations have planted 400 trees in Hasakah and 200 trees in Qamishli, almost 200 metres away from the location of the oil spills in the Khabour.

“This is our solution to save our homes from drought and to respond to the Turkish attacks that are plaguing us,” says Idris Dawood, chairman of the Administrative Committee of the Youth Civil Society Organization, which oversees coordination between the participating groups.

"These trees can be at least a first step towards environmental healing."

The effort is not uncommon in northeast Syria and dovetails with several other projects to combat drought in the region.

In Gueran neighbourhood, an area grappling with deforestation and recurrent droughts, a community initiative planted 1,700 seedlings in February with the goal of ultimately improving air quality .

“Although the campaign was small-scaled covering only the neighbourhood, it was a joint communal effort that helped us feel that we’re helping our city,” says resident Jassem Al-Hamid.

Another successful initiative was launched in March by the residents of Al-Hilaliyah in Qamishli, where Kurds live alongside Syrian IDPs. Members of the community donated funds, each to the best of their ability, to plant more than 1,000 trees.

“The area that was planted near the Turkish border was a barren wasteland . It has now become a communal space, where families can gather and enjoy the fresh air," says Akid Barhou, a resident of the neighbourhood.

Trees can play an important role in mitigating climate change , says Drourish, or “at least create a kind of adaptation to drought and desertification.”

“Such campaigns contribute to creating a kind of environmental balance, provided that they are sustainable, cover large areas, and are constantly cared for."

This article is published in collaboration with Egab .

Oil slicks in the Khabur River in Syria, a major tributary of the Euphrates, have left agriculture “almost impossible” according to one farmer in Hasakah.

For the past two months, Riyadh Al-Aswad has been desperately struggling to keep his wheat crop alive long enough for the <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2024//03//29//agriculture-vs-tourism-how-are-farmers-and-hotels-coping-with-the-spanish-drought/">harvest/strong>/a> season. It begins with a basket of warm bread - sesame seed encrusted, cardamon infused and traditional flatbread - with herby butter and black honey.

Next come the entreés, spicy olive tapenade, grilled halloumi with apricot jam, fried vegetables and a mini loaf of feta-marbled bread. This is followed by homemade falafel with tahini dipping sauce, spiced hummus, foul mudammas beans and shakshuka.

By the time the tiny pancakes, banana bread and fresh fruit arrive, I’ve long admitted defeat. I soon learn the exquisitely presented dishes, deferential waiting staff and sheer volume of food are typical of Saudi hospitality.

Beit Johkdar is one of three historic hotels that have just opened in Jeddah, a city on the Red Sea coast. Several more properties in Al Balad - the old town - are due to open in the next few years. All are part of the Jeddah regeneration project and the wider, ambitious Saudi vision for tourism.

As a country that only began offering tourist visas in 2019, it is a bit of a wild card for a holiday - all the more so if you visit during Ramadan, as I did. Here’s how the country is undergoing dramatic change as it opens up to tourism and how you can dive into its artisanal culture, belt-busting cuisine and storied hospitality in Jeddah.

Jeddah: An ancient city undergoing a renaissance

Driving from the airport into the heart of Jeddah city, you pass kilometre after kilometre of residential blocks, flashy stores and illuminated shopping arcades. But the historic centre - known as Al Balad - is what is drawing tourists.

The name of this ancient city derives from the word grandmother, referring to Eve who descended to earth right on the spot where the city now stands, as Abeer Abu Suleiman, Saudi Arabia’s first female tour guide, explains.

As early as the 1st century BCE, Jeddah was already a thriving fishing hub and a prominent stop on trading routes. It also flourished thanks to its role as the gateway to Mecca , welcoming religious pilgrims from across the globe on their Hajj journeys.

Al Balad has remained the historic heart of this city but, by the late 20th century, its antiquated homes were being abandoned by families seeking more modern and well-equipped houses in newer neighbourhoods.

The area’s fortunes began to change with its UNESCO designation in 2014. In 2021, a regeneration masterplan was announced - and royally endorsed - and the Jeddah Historic District programme was launched to restore some 600 historic properties for residential, tourism and business purposes.

The buildings are constructed from coral stone, limestone and wood. Some are many centuries old and painstaking work has gone into researching and passing on the knowledge of local materials and craftsmanship .

The houses of Al Balad are famous for their roshan - wooden box balconies covering windows intricately decorated with latticework designs and painted in Tunisian blue and Saudi green. These multifunctional structures allow a breeze into rooms, block sunlight and once provided a private space where women could look out without being observed.

Beyond the buildings, the project aims to regenerate the spirit and vitality of a community. In the squares, there are wooden benches and games for children. Museums like the Tariq Abdulhakim Music Center, named after a renowned Saudi musician, have opened. In a labyrinth of narrow alleys, the collective Zawiya 97 has provided workshop space for artisans producing contemporary products using traditional techniques.

Reem Abdulghani demonstrates her own 3D embroidery technique and her clothing label makes a statement with the use of fuchsia and yellow instead of the ubiquitous black and beige of women’s outfits. At woodturning workshop ‘Aromat’, 29-year-old Hassan Mohammed sells artisanal hand-crafted bowls, vases, and candlesticks.

Boutique hotels in historic homes: Where to stay in Jeddah

By the end of the project, 34 structures in Al Balad will house boutique hotels . Three are already operating - Beit Jokhdar, Beit Al Rayess and Beit Kedwan - all within walking distance of each other.

The concept behind the properties is much more than just a place to sleep. The historic residences are named after their previous owners and recreate the personal, individualised experience akin to being a house guest. Their descendants shared memories to help with the restoration.

On arrival, I am shown to the ‘lobby’ in Beit Johkdar, the grandest of the three properties and a kind of central hub at the moment. The entrance hall with its high wooden beamed ceiling, pale stone flags and Arabic inscriptions in gypsum is lit by a chandelier.

I'm poured Arabic coffee - ochre-coloured and infused with cardamom - from a sleek gold-coloured pot while Arabic music tinkles softly. I relax on a plush velvet sofa as the receptionist does the paperwork somewhere out of sight.

At Beit Al Rayess, the architecture is more intimate, with lower ceilings and archways graced with giant ceramic vases. I have a sequence of little rooms - entranceway, bathroom, living area, dressing area and bedroom. The furnishings are dark wood, cream upholstery and plenty of plants.

Beit Kedwan can only be rented in its entirety and has two bedrooms. The lavish residence has a living room with Moorish arched niches and mother-of-pearl inlaid tables and a roof terrace with cushioned seating, lanterns and a canopy. The grand main bedroom has two large artistically-faded rugs and a Murano-style chandelier.

What is it like to visit Jeddah during Ramadan?

Travellers may consider it unwise to visit during Ramadan season; it certainly poses challenges like the lack of food outlets open during the day. But if you can be flexible with your itinerary and sleep schedule, the Muslim festive period is joyous to experience.

Aside from brief two to three-hour windows, shops, restaurants and cafes are closed until late afternoon or evening. But the dearth of crowds during the day does present an opportunity to take a tour on a golf cart unimpeded and snap some atmospheric photos.

The reason to visit during Ramadan becomes clear around 6pm, when queues form in front of streetside kiosks serving freshly prepared traditional foods - strips of beef liver, khubz bread, samosas, a banana and date bake and a fermented yoghurt drink called sobia.

People from all around Jeddah and further afield pile into Al Balad in the evening for iftar - the breaking of the fast. Families, groups of friends and couples gather at tables set out in the squares beneath trees bedecked with fairy lights. They unpack their kiosk food from bags and open takeaway boxes in preparation for sunset.

The atmosphere is quiet and reflective. The muezzin begins his undulating call that resonates around the piazzas and signals that it’s time to break the fast. It is a spiritual and devotional moment but one of community and warmth.

As evening fades to night, people crowd the streets in their finery; abayas are encrusted with gold beads, pearls and embroidery.

There are dozens of ushers with Ramadan-tagged vests to direct the foot traffic and hype up the crowd with celebratory shouts. There's also an army of street cleaners who seem to appear at your elbow miraculously the moment you have empty containers.

At perfume shops, staff stand outside with chalices of burning incense wafting their smoky fragrance over passersby in a traditional welcome.

With Abeer, I while away the hours peeking into 300-year-old buildings with rooftop stargazing and museums with tasters of Ramadan sweets. We dip into tiny shops in the city’s five souqs where abayas bulge from racks along the walls; and learn about the Mecca pilgrimage at the 600-year-old Al Shafei mosque.

I retire to bed at 1am, but the Jeddawi stay out much longer.

In the airy, high-ceilinged dining room of Beit Johkdar Hotel, Jeddah, breakfast is being served.

But the <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//travel//2021//12//22//europe-s-prettiest-fairytale-towns-and-villages/">historic centre - known as Al Balad - is what is drawing tourists.

It also flourished thanks to its role as the gateway to <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//travel//2023//06//26//fragrance-free-toiletries-and-lots-of-snacks-the-ultimate-packing-list-for-the-hajj-pilgri/">Mecca/strong>/a>, welcoming religious pilgrims from across the globe on their Hajj journeys.

<img class="widgetImage__image" loading="lazy" src=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////static.euronews.com//articles//stories//08//38//00//66//808x454_cmsv2_bcce9f96-b228-552b-bb1e-3911b2ce8727-8380066.jpg/" alt="The doors of Al Balad" srcset="https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/38/00/66/384x216_cmsv2_bcce9f96-b228-552b-bb1e-3911b2ce8727-8380066.jpg 384w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/38/00/66/640x360_cmsv2_bcce9f96-b228-552b-bb1e-3911b2ce8727-8380066.jpg 640w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/38/00/66/750x422_cmsv2_bcce9f96-b228-552b-bb1e-3911b2ce8727-8380066.jpg 750w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/38/00/66/828x466_cmsv2_bcce9f96-b228-552b-bb1e-3911b2ce8727-8380066.jpg 828w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/38/00/66/1080x608_cmsv2_bcce9f96-b228-552b-bb1e-3911b2ce8727-8380066.jpg 1080w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/38/00/66/1200x675_cmsv2_bcce9f96-b228-552b-bb1e-3911b2ce8727-8380066.jpg 1200w, https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/38/00/66/1920x1080_cmsv2_bcce9f96-b228-552b-bb1e-3911b2ce8727-8380066.jpg 1920w" sizes="(max-width: 768px) 95vw, (max-width: 1024px) 80vw, (max-width: 1280px) 55vw, 728px"/>

The doors of Al Balad
Rebecca Ann Hughes

Al Balad has remained the historic heart of this city but, by the late 20th century, its antiquated homes were being abandoned by families seeking more modern and well-equipped houses in newer neighbourhoods.

The area’s fortunes began to change with its <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//travel//2024//04//08//ancient-cities-and-ottoman-splendour-turkiyes-must-see-unesco-sites/">UNESCO/strong>/a> designation in 2014. In 2021, a regeneration masterplan was announced - and royally endorsed - and the Jeddah Historic District programme was launched to restore some 600 historic properties for residential, tourism and business purposes.

The buildings are constructed from coral stone, limestone and wood. Some are many centuries old and painstaking work has gone into researching and passing on the knowledge of local materials and <a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//travel//2022//12//02//kanazawa-and-toyama-the-magic-of-japan/">craftsmanship/strong>/a>./p>/n The houses of Al Balad are famous for their roshan - wooden box balconies covering windows intricately decorated with latticework designs and painted in Tunisian blue and Saudi green. But if you can be flexible with your itinerary and sleep schedule, the Muslim festive period is joyous to experience.

Aside from brief two to three-hour windows, shops, restaurants and cafes are closed until late afternoon or evening.
