The EU had not yet accepted the invite that was extended earlier this year.

Amoroso said Tuesday's decision is intended to show that EU representatives "are not welcome to come here to our country while the genocidal sanctions against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, and especially its government, are maintained."

The bloc, however, only maintains sanctions against more than 50 Venezuelans accused of acts of repression or efforts to undermine democracy, but not against the government as a whole.

The announcement came two weeks after the EU temporarily lifted sanctions against four officials linked to the electoral body, including Amoroso, in recognition of the steps taken ahead of the July 28 election. But the relief was vehemently rejected by Venezuela's government and Amoroso, who argued it was selective and insufficient.

An EU statement called on the National Electoral Council to reconsider its decision.

"The Venezuelan people should be able to choose their next president in credible, transparent and competitive elections, supported by international observation, including that of the European Union, which has a long and distinguished record of independent and impartial observation," said the statement posted on the platform X.

In 2021, the EU accepted the invitation of Venezuelan officials to send a mission to observe regional elections that included gubernatorial and mayoral races. The mission concluded that the contest happened under better conditions than the country's elections in recent years, but that it was nonetheless marred by the use of public funds to benefit pro-government candidates.

Election anomalies cited by the mission included delays in opening and closing voting centres, disproportionately favourable coverage for the ruling party on state television and the use of free food and other goods as political tools, among others.

Venezuela's electoral body earlier this year set the presidential election for July 28 and extended invitations to various organisations to observe the contest. Those decisions fulfilled some of the provisions of an agreement signed last year between Maduro's government and the US-backed Unitary Platform opposition coalition.

Under the agreement signed on the Caribbean island of Barbados, both sides vowed to work toward improving conditions for a free and fair election. Still, Venezuela's government continuously tested the limits of the accord, by, among other actions, blocking the candidacy of the president's chief opponent, María Corina Machado.

Machado, a former lawmaker, won the coalition's October presidential primary with more than 90% of support. But the country's top court in January upheld an administrative decision blocking her candidacy. Her chosen substitute was barred from the ballot, too.

Machado and the coalition are now backing former diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia.

Venezuela's electoral authorities on Tuesday revoked an invitation for a European Union mission to observe the country's upcoming presidential election, in which President Nicolás Maduro is seeking reelection.

The head of the National Electoral Council, Elvis Amoroso, cited economic sanctions imposed by the 27-nation bloc as the reason for withdrawing the invitation.

Machado and the coalition are now backing former diplomat Edmundo González Urrutia.

https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/46/70/22/{{w}}x{{h}}_cmsv2_e01e462b-024a-5749-9149-e2b9362dbef0-8467022.jpg
A Bolivarian Militia member stands guard next to a banner of the National Electoral Council where people can register to vote in Caracas, Venezuela.
A Bolivarian Militia member stands guard next to a banner of the National Electoral Council where people can register to vote in Caracas, Venezuela.
https://static.euronews.com/articles/stories/08/46/70/22/{{w}}x{{h}}_cmsv2_7bd8e39f-1f33-5ff4-9e37-28bef81dcfc1-8467022.jpg
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro speaks at the National Election Commission as he formalises his re-election candidacy.
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro speaks at the National Election Commission as he formalises his re-election candidacy.
Ariana Cubillos/Copyright 2024 The AP. arguments in Donald Trump's historic hush money trial concluded on Tuesday in a Manhattan courtroom, marking the final opportunity for prosecutors and defence lawyers to convince the jury of their respective cases before deliberations began.

Jurors will undertake the unprecedented task of deciding whether to convict the former US president of felony criminal charges stemming from hush money payments tied to an alleged scheme to buy and bury stories that might have threatened Trump's 2016 presidential campaign.

At the heart of the charges are reimbursements paid to Trump fixer-turned-foe Michael Cohen to cover a $130,000 (about €120,000) payment that was given to adult actress Stormy Daniels in exchange for not going public with her claim about a 2006 sexual encounter with Trump.

Prosecutors say the payments to Cohen, Trump's then-lawyer, were falsely logged as “legal expenses” to hide the true nature of the transactions.

Trump has denied all wrongdoing. He pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records — charges which are punishable by up to four years in prison.

Closing arguments lasted all day on Tuesday, with jury deliberations set to begin as soon as Wednesday.

All about Cohen

Trump attorney Todd Blanche had a clear message for jurors: the prosecution's case rests on the testimony of Cohen, and he can’t be believed.

Cohen is a crucial witness because he was the one who made the hush money payment to Daniels. It is the reimbursements to Cohen that prosecutors say were falsely and unlawfully logged as legal expenses.

As the defence has done throughout the case, Blanche attacked Cohen as a liar with a personal vendetta against his former boss. While Blanche tried to chip away at Cohen's credibility, the defence showed jurors a PowerPoint slide that read: “Case Turns on Cohen”.

Blanche repeatedly reminded jurors of Cohen's past lies, including his 2018 guilty plea for lying to the US Congress. Trump's defence also played the jury clips of Cohen’s podcast in which the now-disbarred attorney said seeing the former president booked on criminal charges “fills me with delight”.

The case against Trump is built around testimony from “a witness that outright hates the defendant, wants him in jail, is actively making money off that hatred,” Blanche said.

Prosecutor Joshua Steinglass acknowledged that Cohen is a challenging witness. But prosecutors did not choose him, Steinglass argued; Trump did.

“It’s not about whether you like Michael Cohen," he told the jury. "It’s not about whether you want to go into business with Michael Cohen. It’s whether he has useful, reliable information to give you about what went down in this case, and the truth is that he was in the best position to know."

'Conspiracy and cover-up'

The prosecutor used his closing argument to bring jurors back to what District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office alleges is the crux of the case: a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election by keeping Daniels' story from surfacing. The case, “at its core, is about a conspiracy and a cover-up," Steinglass said.

The purpose of the effort, Steinglass argued, was “to manipulate and defraud the voters, to pull the wool over their eyes in a coordinated fashion.”

It’s impossible to know whether Trump’s effort to “hoodwink voters” made a difference in the 2016 election, Steinglass said, but that’s not something prosecutors have to prove.

Steinglass pushed back against the defence's contention that the former president was trying to protect his reputation and family – not his campaign – by shielding them from embarrassing stories about his personal life.

The prosecutor said it's “no coincidence” that while Daniels' alleged sexual encounter with Trump happened in 2006, she wasn't paid for her silence until right before the 2016 election.

The defence, meanwhile, told jurors that “every campaign in this country is a conspiracy to promote a candidate, a group of people who are working together to help somebody win." Trump’s alleged efforts to suppress negative stories were no different, Blanche said.

“The government wants you to believe that President Trump did these things with his records to conceal efforts to promote his successful candidacy in 2016, the year before,” Blanche said. “Even if you find that is true, that is not enough...it doesn’t matter if there’s a conspiracy to win an election."

Campaigning at the courthouse

Outside the courthouse, there were duelling press conferences from the Trump and Biden campaigns, which sought to capitalise on the gathering of reporters and cameras to attack their respective opponents and score political points.

While the defence was delivering its closing argument, the Biden campaign deployed outside the courthouse actor Robert De Niro and a pair of police officers who defended the US Capitol on 6 January 2021. It was a sharp about-face for Biden’s team, which had largely ignored the trial since it began six weeks ago.

De Niro and the officers didn’t reference Trump's criminal case directly but slammed the former president as a threat to the country. De Niro told reporters that if Trump returns to the White House, Americans can “kiss these freedoms goodbye that we all take for granted."

Trump’s campaign staffers followed with their own news conference at the same spot. Trump’s senior campaign adviser Jason Miller told reporters that the Biden campaign's press event showed that the trial was political.

“After months of saying politics had nothing to do with this trial, they showed up and made a campaign event out of a lower Manhattan trial day for President Trump,” Miller said. Karoline Leavitt, the campaign press secretary, said the event was “a full blown concession that this trial is a witch hunt that comes from the top.”

Politicised language

The defence repeatedly referred to the prosecution as “the government”. The prosecution invoked the phrase “big lie”. Closing arguments on both sides were peppered with words and phrases that have become politicised.

Blanche called the prosecution “the government” — a term typically used for federal prosecutors, not the state-level team trying Trump’s case.

While Trump’s two main attorneys are former federal prosecutors who are used to arguing in federal courtrooms, in New York, state prosecutors are typically referred to in court as “the people,” short for “the people of the State of New York”.

But Trump has also been trying to cast the case — and the separate federal cases brought by Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith — as a politically motivated effort by President Joe Biden’s administration to tank his re-election campaign.

However, the hush money case was filed by local prosecutors in Manhattan who do not work for the Justice Department, and the Justice Department has said the White House has had no involvement in the two Trump cases brought by Smith.

But by referring to the prosecution as the “government,” the defence is evoking images of a “deep state” conspiracy. Trump and many of his supporters have long claimed that a nefarious cabal is hellbent on illegitimately putting him behind bars and preventing him from retaking the White House.

Closing arguments in Donald Trump's historic hush money trial concluded on Tuesday in a Manhattan courtroom, marking the final opportunity for prosecutors and defence lawyers to convince the jury of their respective cases before deliberations began.

Cohen is a crucial witness because he was the one who made the hush money payment to Daniels. a collaboration between ESA and Japanese space agency JAXA - will study how the formation of clouds and the density of aerosols in the atmosphere impact the Earth's temperature.

Obscured by low cloud cover at the Vandenburg Space Force Base in southern California, the satellite lifted off the launchpad onboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 launcher at 3.20 pm local time (12.20 am CET on Wednesday).

The satellite then separated from the rocket 10 minutes into flight and made its first contact with the Hartebeesthoek ground station in South Africa less than an hour after launch.

Understanding how clouds contribute to climate crisis

Short for Earth Cloud Aerosol and Radiation Explorer, EarthCARE was first conceived in 2004 and was designed and built by Airbus and 75 subcontracted companies.

It is expected to be in orbit for at least three years gathering data for ESA's Copernicus programme.

The latest and largest of ESA's Earth Explorer satellites, it is equipped with four state-of-the art instruments, including a Cloud Profiling Radar provided by JAXA.

For the first time, these different pieces of equipment will capture different measurements simultaneously, giving scientists a better understanding of how clouds and aerosols - small particules like dust or water droplets - disrupt the Earth's radiation balance and contribute to the climate crisis.

Speaking to Euronews Next in California, ESA's director-general Josef Aschbacher said he was "relieved" that the launch was a success.

"[I am] very happy for all the people who've worked for decades on this project; either from the science community or from the engineering side, industry, ESA, my own colleagues," he said.

"I know how much blood, sweat, and tears have been flowing into this mission to make it to where it is today".

Aschbacher worked on the EarthCARE mission as the director of ESA’s Earth Observation Programmes for five years.

"EarthCARE was one of the challenges I had on the table when I took up duty in 2016. We had to overcome technical hurdles and problems. And seeing this now all functioning is also a big satisfaction. Personally, I was touched and very emotional when I saw the launch. number of heat-related howler monkeys deaths in Mexico has risen to 157, the government said, with a tragically small number of the primates treated or recovering.

Meanwhile, an animal park in northern Mexico confirmed it has received reports that at least a hundred parrots, bats and other animals have died, apparently of dehydration.

A heat dome - an area of strong high pressure centred over the southern Gulf of Mexico and northern Central America - has blocked clouds from forming and caused extensive sunshine and hot temperatures all across Mexico.

A 'synergy' of causes is behind the monkey deaths

Last week, environmentalists had reported that 138 of the midsize primates, known for their roaring vocal calls, had been found dead in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco since 16 May. Almost two-thirds of the country are expected to see highs of 45 degrees Celsius on Monday.

Late Sunday the Environment Department reported that number had risen to 157, and that research was continuing into the causes of the deaths.

Wildlife biologist Gilberto Pozo attributed the deaths to a heat stroke, noting a “synergy” of factors - including high heat, drought, forest fires and logging that deprives the monkeys of water, shade and the fruit they eat - appeared to be to blame, while saying a pathogen, disease or other factor can’t yet be ruled out.

The department said deaths were occurring in both Tabasco and the neighbouring state of Chiapas, and that 13 monkeys were under treatment and seven had been treated and released back into their habitat. The department said some of the monkeys were being treated for dehydration, and that three were in serious but stable condition.

But with heat, fires, and deforestation hitting the trees where the howler monkeys live, it was unclear whether even releasing them could ensure their survival.

Birds and bats are also dying in the heat

In the northern state of San Luis Potosi, Ena Buenfil, the director of the Selva Teenek eco-park, told The Associated Press on Monday that her facility has been overwhelmed as parrots, bats, toucans have died due to the heat.

Buenfil said when the heat wave began in mid-May their clinic to help animals quickly filled up with sick birds and they received a wave of reports by locals finding dead or suffering birds.

Because of scarce resources by authorities, Buenfil said the number is likely only a small percentage of the animals affected, but added that their organisation has worked with Civil Protection to aid some birds.

Buenfil said birds mainly die of dehydration in the heat, and are often disproportionately affected because they don't have anywhere to store water. Meanwhile, bats would become dehydrated sleeping in the beating afternoon heat. She recommended that locals put out bowls of water for animals.

“We’ve never seen a situation like what’s happening right now,” she said, adding if they see more heat peaks like this one “there is not going to be much we can do for the animals.”

“There are going to be a lot of casualties to the ecosystem if we continue this trend of heat waves in the region,” said Buenfil.

Normally quite intimidating, howler monkeys are muscular and some can be as tall as 90 centimetres, with tails just as long. Some males weigh more than 13.5 kilograms and can live up to 20 years. They are equipped with big jaws and a fearsome set of teeth and fangs. But mostly they’re know for their lion-like roars, which bely their size.

With below-average rainfall throughout almost all the country so far this year, lakes and dams are drying up, and water supplies are running out.

Authorities have had to truck in water for everything from hospitals to fire-fighting teams. Low levels at hydroelectric dams have contributed to power blackouts in some parts of the country.

The number of heat-related howler monkeys deaths in Mexico has risen to 157, the government said, with a tragically small number of the primates treated or recovering.

Meanwhile, an animal park in northern Mexico confirmed it has received reports that at least a hundred parrots, bats and other animals have died, apparently of dehydration.

<a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2024//05//24//what-is-a-heat-dome-how-to-cool-down-in-a-heatwave-and-what-s-needed-from-governments/">A heat dome - an area of strong high pressure centred over the southern Gulf of Mexico and northern Central America - has blocked clouds from forming and caused extensive sunshine and hot temperatures all across Mexico.

<a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2024//05//27//inside-japans-cat-island-where-felines-are-worshipped-at-an-altar-and-said-to-bring-good-l/">Inside Japan's cat island where felines are worshipped at an altar and said to bring good luck

<a href=https://www.euronews.com/"https:////www.euronews.com//green//2024//05//24//disconnected-from-reality-why-wildlife-protection-groups-want-animal-diplomacy-to-stop/">/u2018Disconnected from reality’: Why wildlife protection groups want animal diplomacy to stop

A 'synergy' of causes is behind the monkey deaths

Last week, environmentalists had reported that 138 of the midsize primates, known for their roaring vocal calls, had been found dead in the Gulf coast state of Tabasco since 16 May.
